CST: Certified Surgical Technologist
CSFA: Certified Surgical First Assistant

As surgical assistants, we provide aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.  In addition to intraoperative duties, we also perform preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care.  We assist the surgeon during the operation under the direction and supervision of that surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations.

Certification as a Surgical Technologist or Surgical First Assistant demonstrates that the individual meets the national standard for knowledge that underlies surgical technologist and surgical first assistance practice.  Certified individuals possess mastery of a broad range of skills related to surgical procedures, aseptic technique and patient care.

Because certification is voluntary, the choice to become certified exhibits pride in the profession, the desire to be recognized for mastery of scientific principles, as well as an ongoing commitment to quality patient care.
